The 2021 edition of Kieler Woche had a sunny but slow start for the 37 participating OK Dinghies with the only race of the day abandoned at the downwind mark as the already light wind became too weak to finish the race.
After a general recall, the German Andre Budzien, triple world champion, started near the end of the boat in 4-5 knots of wind and made his way to the middle to the right with a good lead at the first brand of Andreas Pich, from Germany and recent Danish champion, Bo Petersen, from Denmark.
The wind was noticeably lighter at the top and as Budzien stretched out to gain a comfortable lead, Petersen went very low on the first span to move on to the second. However, at the bottom mark, the race committee canceled the race because the wind died down even further. After an additional hour of waiting, the fleet was sent home.
