Life Beyond Dinghies for College Teams >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News
The Storm Trysail Club and Larchmont Yacht Club (Larchmont, NY) will host the 2021 Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (IOR) on October 9-10, offering college sailing teams an alternative to the typical sailing keelboat hosted by Inter -Collegiate Sailing Association.
âThere is great interest from the schools as much of the college sailing season was canceled last year – including our event,â said IOR Co-Chair Doug Lynn. “All of the schools that initially committed to the event last year are planning to attend this year and there is still room for more.”
The event is invitation-only with boats provided ranging from one-designs like the J / 105, J / 109 and J / 44 to competitive racing machines that frequently spend the season racing throughout the Northeast. Boats are donated by local owners with a representative on each boat as a safety guard for the college team.
âWe expect at least 50 schools to participate this year, some of which have two teams,â said Lynn co-chair Ann Myer. âNew this year, we are adding a J / 88 and a Figaro class to the range. “
Alongside the navigation, the teams will also be welcomed at the social events of the Larchmont Yacht Club, which also embody the IOR.
âWe love welcoming the young sailors and all the volunteers here at the Larchmont Yacht Club,â said LYC Commodore Rob Dailey. âCreating opportunities for young sailors and veterans to network and have a new experience is a great way to end a season. ”
âThis event relies on volunteers to make it happen,â said Commodore Ed Cesare of Storm Trysail. “Larchmont Yacht Club as the host, the race committee, and most importantly all boat owners who understand the importance of nurturing the next generation of offshore sailors.”
